If one old report says five retentions and another says six, check whether it counts Right to Match and whether it predates the final rules. For IPL 2025, the confirmed allowance was six through retention and RTM combined. This historical guide separates that framework from earlier discussion; for a later auction, use that season’s official rules.

The six-player allowance
The IPL Governing Council’s September 28, 2024 release set a combined allowance of six. Within it, franchises could retain at most five capped players and at most two uncapped players. Capped Indian and overseas players were covered by the capped limit. The limits work together; they are not separate allocations to add to six.
Think of the combined allowance as a roster constraint rather than a list of automatic auction wins. Retaining a player before bidding and using an RTM opportunity at the auction are different routes. A team’s later retention list is needed to understand how much flexibility it actually carried into the auction.
Auction purse and salary cap are different figures
The release set the 2025 auction purse at INR 120 crore. It separately described a total salary cap that included incremental performance pay and match fees. Confusing those categories can make a budget comparison look larger or smaller than it is. Keep the label attached whenever quoting a number.
An auction purse is not a predicted final squad cost. To compare two franchises, use the same stage and the same category of money. Our Mumbai Indians retention background is a team-specific reading path; this page remains the rules reference rather than a forecast of whom MI would buy.
Use the final retention record after the rules
The official retention list was announced after the October 31, 2024 window closed. It records team selections, spending and remaining auction purse. That later record answers a different question from the September regulations: not what teams were allowed to do, but what they actually chose.
When reviewing a preseason article, check its date before treating a possible retention as confirmed. A player discussed in July or September was not necessarily on the final list. Rumour, eligibility, retention and an auction purchase are four different statuses.
The meeting and final regulations are separate records
Read the September 2024 regulations for the permitted retention framework, then the October 2024 list for each franchise’s final choices. Earlier reports of possible rules or possible retentions are background rather than confirmation.
For the player-classification detail, read the IPL 2025 uncapped-player rule. The confirmed CSK retention record and Mumbai Indians retention background address franchise-level choices rather than proposing new auction regulations.
How to read another auction story
First identify its season and publication date. Then decide whether the source records a proposal, a regulation, a retention or a completed transaction. Only compare figures after those statuses are clear. This small distinction prevents an old forecast from turning into an apparently current rule.
This historical summary does not claim that all provisions were unchanged in later auctions. If you need a later season, locate that season’s official regulations. The linked primary releases below are the reference for the facts discussed here.
